Background of the Study
Financial mismanagement is one of the leading causes of business failure, particularly in developing regions like Kaduna State. For businesses, proper financial management is critical in ensuring sustainable operations, securing funding, and making informed strategic decisions. Financial mismanagement can take various forms, including poor budgeting, inadequate financial planning, ineffective cash flow management, and lack of financial controls (Gusau & Mohammed, 2023). These issues can lead to severe liquidity problems, loss of profitability, and ultimately, business closures.
In Kaduna State, a region that is home to a growing number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), financial mismanagement has been identified as a primary contributor to the high rate of business failure. Businesses often face challenges in accessing affordable finance, coupled with a lack of financial literacy among entrepreneurs, which exacerbates the problem of financial mismanagement (Abdullahi & Musa, 2024). This study seeks to explore the different aspects of financial mismanagement and examine how they affect the likelihood of business failure in Kaduna State.
Statement of the Problem
Many businesses in Kaduna State fail due to poor financial management practices, which result in inefficiencies, insufficient cash flow, and inability to meet financial obligations. Financial mismanagement often manifests as overspending, undercapitalization, poor financial record-keeping, and lack of strategic financial planning. These practices increase the vulnerability of businesses to external shocks, such as changes in market conditions or credit shortages, and hinder their growth prospects. The study aims to investigate the specific financial mismanagement practices that contribute to business failures in Kaduna State and provide recommendations for improving financial management practices to prevent business closures.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the common financial mismanagement practices among businesses in Kaduna State.
2. To examine the relationship between financial mismanagement and business failure in Kaduna State.
3. To recommend strategies for improving financial management practices to reduce business failure rates in Kaduna State.
Research Questions
1. What financial mismanagement practices are prevalent among businesses in Kaduna State?
2. How do financial mismanagement practices contribute to business failure in Kaduna State?
3. What measures can businesses in Kaduna State take to improve financial management and prevent business failure?
Research Hypotheses
1. Financial mismanagement is a significant contributor to business failure in Kaduna State.
2. Businesses that engage in poor financial management practices are more likely to fail in Kaduna State.
3. Improving financial management practices will reduce the rate of business failure in Kaduna State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on SMEs in Kaduna State and explore the financial mismanagement practices that lead to business failure. A limitation of the study is that it may not capture all external factors that contribute to business failure, such as market volatility or changes in regulatory frameworks.
